The Chinese New Year was yesterday (Jan. 26th).
2009 is the year of the OX.
How do I know this?
I looked it up on the internet.
Why did I look up it up?
Because some one sent Mark Cuban the poster above? It appeared in a Chinese basketball magazine.
I think the person that sent it to him stole it from the blog http://tanjieblog.blog.sohu.com
I looked up the address but it was in Chinese so I couldn't read one character. I can barely read English let alone Chinese, but I knew it had to be a blog. Wonder how?
So lacking even the most basic skills in the Chinese language I emailed my home boy Michael Wong who 1) Speaks Chinese 2) Reads Chinese and 3) Sells great Chinese food at a restaurant in South Dallas called Valentino's. Yes, Valentino's. He could for sure translate this poster to English.
His answer reads pretty impressive in English but it's all Chinese to me. Maybe he is right on with his translation or all Wong...just kidding. Sorry had to do it.
His translation below:
Pretty cool poster...Hope this helps
The characters next to NBA
Red character: OX
Next character: team
Next three characters: Wishes you a Happy New Year.
Which means: NBA OX team Wishes you a Happy New Year...so maybe this is wrong and it is suppose to read Team NBA wishes you a Happy New Year in the year of the OX.
5 LETTERS under that:
Calf (first two characters) Welcomes (third character) The Year of the OX(last two characters).
So I guess: The Mavericks are known as the Calves in China: "The Mavericks Welcomes the Year of the OX.
Stackhouse's hat: fu = Good Fortune or Happiness but since the character is upside down it means Good fortune or happiness is already here or its coming.
Terry's banner: Gong He Xin Xi = Happy New Years
Kidd's banner: Niu Nian Da Ji = Prosperity in the year of the OX
That explanation seems pretty slick to me. You know something different? I don't so I am going with it.
Good job Michael! Thanks!!!
