Probably for the first time in NBA history, Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki participated in a two-a-day practice session last week. Most two-a-day practice sessions are reserved for the first week of training camp in October.
But last Friday evening a special practice session was held at the Mavericks practice court at the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks regular practice was held earlier that morning.
The new teammates that joined Jason and Dirk that evening were all affiliated with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. A few of the new official Mavericks practice players were on loan for the evening from a local wheel chair basketball team.
Before the practice got started everyone toured the locker room and took picture with Jason and Dirk. Each player also got some autographs, a picture, and a hand shake from the Mavericks guard and forward.
Once the introductions and formality of greetings were finished it was time to hit the court. The practice consisted of three high pressure games of “Knock Out.”
"Knock Out" is a shooting game where each player lines up single file at the top of the key to shoot a basket. Each player shoots from this designated spot following the person in front of him. If your shot is unsuccessful on the first assigned attempt you must get the rebound and make a basket from anywhere on the floor before the person behind you makes their assigned shot. Most players get rebounds and lay-in their failed jumpers. They following player can step up and shoot ounce the shooter in front of them has taken their shot.
“Knock Out” is an exciting high pressure game.
The competition in this “knock out” game was amazing. It was the type of high pressure game simulation situations that Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle always tries to attain in his practices. This particular practice was so good in fact that both Dirk and Jason had stellar games the next night in the Mavericks win against the Utah Jazz.
Also during the special practice session everyone got to chow down on a truck load of pizza and churros from Pizza Patron.
After practice everyone took a team picture which is above.
